The Hague, The Netherlands: An inspirational couple who care for and inspire each other won the Land Rover Above and Beyond Award at the Invictus Games The Hague 2020 – presented by the Duke of Sussex, Founding Patron of the Invictus Games Foundation.
Stef Wolput, known as Wolf, and his wife Katrien de Pillecyn received the award in a closing ceremony that paid tribute to the 500 competitors who have displayed incredible sportsmanship in The Hague.
Wolf, who served the Belgian Air Force for 33 years, was inspired by watching the 2014 Invictus Games on his couch with the curtains drawn while suffering from depression. Committed to caring for Katrien, who had Multiple Sclerosis, he was then affected by a neurological disorder that meant his wife became a carer too.
INSPIRATIONAL INVICTUS GAMES COUPLE WOLF AND KATRIEN WIN LAND ROVER ‘ABOVE AND BEYOND’ AWARD
Deciding to accept his disability, he focused his energy on rehabilitation with the Invictus Games as his goal. Since then he has conquered mountains and competed in athletics, rowing and cycling, winning the first medal for Team Belgium with silver in the IT1 1,500m race and bronze in the IT1 200m.
Katrien has been by his side throughout as the couple care for and encourage each other to triumph over adversity together.
The Wolf who arrived at these Games a week ago is a very different Wolf to the one who will leave tomorrow. It has been incredible to watch him on his journey. He and Katrien have shown the love and support for each other that embodies the Invictus spirit. We know they will continue to care for each other and share in each other’s achievements forever and I am thrilled to see them receive the Land Rover Above and Beyond Award.

I speak on behalf of everyone at Jaguar Land Rover when I say how proud I am of every single competitor who has played a part of the Invictus Games in The Hague. I would also like to extend my thanks to all of the family and friends like Katrien, who have been the continuous support to the individuals we’ve seen perform here this week. I know they couldn’t have done it without you, and I thank you all for sharing your stories.
