Gaydon, UK – Thursday 22 August 2024: Land Rover Classic curated a unique showcase of Range Rover and Defender vehicles used by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®, creating an unforgettable highlight of Monterey Car Week, and leading the proudly British Range Rover and Defender brands’ participation in the prestigious annual motoring lifestyle events on the Californian peninsula.

Drawing on JLR’s long and ongoing association with the Royal Family, which extends as far back as the birth of the Land Rover itself in 1948, each vehicle in the collection saw use by the Royal family, in an official capacity or as part of the household fleet.

The historic vehicles, from 1954 Land Rover Series I to 2009 Range Rover – including six specially‑commissioned State Review vehicles – were generously provided by the Royal Household private collection, Land Rover Classic, The British Motor Museum and private collections.

It was fantastic to see such an enthusiastic reaction to this unique collection of famous vehicles from the Range Rover and Defender brands’ heritage, which have dutifully served the British Royal Family over the past eight decades. To see them presented together, amongst the world’s rarest, most desirable and priceless classic cars at such a spectacular and globally renowned event, was a once‑in‑a‑lifetime opportunity. It gives us great pride to pay tribute to Her Majesty and mark our ongoing royal connections in this way.

Lennard Hoornik
Chief Commercial Officer, JLR

What a pleasure to welcome these magnificent vehicles to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. It was amazing to witness Her Majesty’s ten Land Rovers and Range Rovers rolling past the front door of The Lodge at Pebble Beach and pulling on to the famed fairways of Pebble Beach Golf Links – and I was honoured to greet them there. Crowds were astonished and delighted. Later in the day, the vehicles were an impressive sight parading across our show ramp during the Awards Ceremony – to great applause.

Sandra Button
Chairman of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®

The Royal vehicles made their official debut during Pebble Beach Dawn Patrol presented by Hagerty, a timeless tradition at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®, in which the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust’s 1954 Jaguar D‑type prototype also took part before taking its place on the fairway. Celebrating 70 years of the highly successful sports racing car, the 3.4‑litre XK‑powered D‑type prototype also enjoyed a number of demonstration laps at Laguna Seca race circuit during the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.

Ahead of the historic presentation at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®, specially invited Range Rover guests entertained at the Range Rover House witnessed the unveiling of the 2024 Range Rover SV Carmel Edition, a limited edition of 17 long‑wheelbase models finished by SV Bespoke.

This year’s Carmel Edition curation draws inspiration from the picturesque landscape of lush woodlands and ocean cliffs along the breathtaking coastal roads surrounding Carmel. featuring a Bespoke Satin Green exterior with Sequoia Green and Perlino interior, colour‑matched wheels and complementary black metal badging with 24k gold accents.

The Range Rover SV Carmel Edition was joined by the high‑performance Range Rover Sport SV EDITION TWO, making its world debut. Royal Land Rover display vehicle details

1954 Land Rover Series I State Review vehicle

The very first State Review Land Rover vehicle featured a custom‑designed rear platform and accompanied HM Queen Elizabeth II and HM The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, on a six‑month tour of the Commonwealth. This particular vehicle was sent to Australia for that leg of the tour and is now under the care of a private collector in the United States.

1954 Land Rover Series I (NXN1)

Originally ordered by HM King George VI, it was used by HM Queen Elizabeth II and other senior members of the Royal Family at Balmoral. Land Rover apprentices restored it in 2010, and it now resides in the Land Rover Classic collection.

1958 Land Rover Series II State Review vehicle

The second official ceremonial review Land Rover vehicle featured blue side light lenses, which were switched on whenever a member of the Royal family was being carried. This example was a reserve vehicle, which explains its low mileage of approximately 13,000 miles. It forms part of the Royal Collection at the British Motor Museum, Gaydon.

1966 Land Rover Series IIA Station Wagon (JYV1D)

Driven by HM Queen Elizabeth II, this was the first Station Wagon of its kind to be fitted with a six‑cylinder engine. It also features a host of special features, including leather seats, a wooden dog guard, and side steps, to help it fulfil its Royal duties. It now forms part of the Royal Collection at the British Motor Museum, Gaydon.

1974 Range Rover State Review vehicle

The first Range Rover vehicle to take the role of ceremonial State Review vehicle entered service in 1975 and was used until 2002. Its specially modified rear included foldaway seats and a lectern containing concealed umbrellas. An additional exhaust silencer ensured noise from the V8 engine was kept to a minimum for its Royal passengers. It now forms part of the Royal Collection at the British Motor Museum, Gaydon.

1990 Range Rover State Review vehicle

The third State Review Range Rover vehicle featured in the image chosen by HM Queen Elizabeth II for her 1994 Christmas card, where she and HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, were pictured attending the 50th Anniversary of D‑Day Landings in Arromanches. This vehicle is part of the British Motor Museum collection.

1996 Range Rover State Review vehicle

The fourth State Review vehicle provided by Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations, replacing the previous State I Range Rover from 1990. The customised rear platform also has four foldaway seats, rather than the usual two, as in other State Review vehicles.

2005 Range Rover State Review vehicle

This State Review Range Rover was famously used to transport the then‑Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – William and Catherine – and Prince Harry during HM Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday parade in 2016.

1983 Defender 110 V8 (A444RYV)

A personal vehicle used by HM Queen Elizabeth II at the Sandringham estate. This vehicle is part of the private Royal collection and, having been commissioned by HM The Queen, is part of the active Royal fleet.

2009 Range Rover (CK58 NPJ)

There are numerous pictures of HM Queen Elizabeth II behind the wheel of this Range Rover vehicle, as it was her favoured vehicle after it joined the fleet. The famous labrador mascot that adorned the bonnet has been removed for safekeeping.
