The Gumpathon Crosses the Finish Line on Veterans Day

13 November 2010

Veterans Day is a special day for many, but this year it had an extra special meaning for a group of six members of the British, and United States military. After 63 grueling days and 3,530 miles, the Gumpathon team completed their epic journey from coast‑to‑coast, crossing the finish line at 10:30 am on November 11, to a large group of spectators, family, press, and active military personnel, writes Sean Gorman, Technical Trainer, Jaguar Land Rover University.

The team was comprised of Damian Todd, Mark Ormond, Charles Padilla, Jamie Jobson, Lloyd Fenner and James Mazzoni‑Dalton. All members are either current or retired British or United States military members, and after witnessing such a heart‑felt welcome at the finish line, I couldn't wait to hear from the man whose dream started this whole incredible journey – Damian Todd.

When asked about his feelings at the finish line, Todd shared, “It hasn’t really set in yet that I just ran across the United States. It’s really strange to think that I flew into New York, and will be flying home from Los Angeles ‑ all without driving, or flying. Looking back now it does seem pretty incredible.”

The team crossed 16 states, 10 mountain ranges and averaged nearly 60 miles per day. With such a tight schedule, they could not stop for anything, including the weather, which at times was less than ideal. Despite the weather, the team pushed through and stayed on track day after day; always keeping their goal of helping injured service men & women as their ultimate motivation.

After some of the cheering and celebrating at the finish line subsided, I had a chance to talk with Paul Shearsby, a member of the crew that had a different experience from the runners. Paul’s job was to follow behind the runners, and act as a safety vehicle for the team. Paul explained, “I’m so happy that we had such amazing and comfortable vehicles to aid us along our journey. We hadn’t thought about it before the trip, but the LR4 and Range Rover Sport couldn’t have been a better fit for our team. Mark, a triple amputee, was able to easily drive the vehicles due to their adjustable seats and air suspension. I think he’s hoping to get one now when he gets home.”

After a short presentation by the team members, a reception was held at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company on the pier. It was a warm reception of family and friends that I was proud to be a part of. I say congratulations to The Gumpathon team and thank you for your service and inspiration.
