Land Rover Continues Its Quest for a Cure

14 June 2010

When one thinks adventure, the thought of Land Rover is not far behind, so when a top‑rated adventure race designed to push its competitors to the absolute limit asked Land Rover to be a sponsor, it was an offer we couldn't refuse, writes Barbara Barrett, Communications Manager, Jaguar Land Rover Canada. For the fourth consecutive year, Land Rover Canada will continue its sponsorship of Quest for a Cure ‑ an eight hour adventure race held in Montebello, Quebec with funds raised in support of finding a cure for cancer through the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation (ORCF).

Quest for a Cure was founded in 2002 by Ottawa firefighter and adventure racer Jim Andrews, along with adventure racing teammate and fellow firefighter, Mark Johnston, both of whom had been diagnosed with cancer. Through their shared experience fighting the disease, they saw the need to raise money and awareness for the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation. Today, Quest for a Cure is a highly respected, registered non‑profit organization run entirely by volunteers.

The eight hour race, held at the home of Land Rover's driving school at Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello and its sister property, Fairmont Kenauk, includes 22 miles of mountain biking, hiking, navigating and water challenges. In teams of two or three, competitors must always stay together and complete the entire course, passing all checkpoints in the correct order, to be considered as a ranked team when they cross the finish line.

Adventure racers are an amazing bunch ‑ the tougher the race, the happier they are as they seem to thrive on exhaustion, bruised knees and scraped limbs. There is no cliff too steep to tackle and no forest too thick to navigate. They are driven even harder by the fact that their efforts go to a good cause.

Land Rover, a brand that promises exceptional on‑and‑off‑road performance, will be providing support vehicles for the event. The high‑performance capabilities of the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Land Rover LR4 and the LR2 make Land Rover the perfect adventure racing partner for the endurance athletes.

With help from the community, the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation is leading the fight for cancer survivorship in Eastern Ontario. The Cancer Foundation is working to fill the gaps in services for cancer patients and have partnered with 11 local hospitals to ensure residents have the best possible care close to their homes, shorter wait times, improved quality of life and access to the latest new therapies.

Since its inception, Quest for a Cure has raised more than $300,000 for the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation to help ensure cancer research and treatment remains a priority in the community.

Quest for a Cure 2010 takes place June 26 at Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello in Quebec. For more information on the race, visit www.questforacure.ca.
