Land Rover Expedition America Team Successfully Crosses The USA Off-Road

27 August 2013

On Wednesday August 21, the Land Rover Expedition America team successfully reached the Pacific Ocean at Port Orford, Oregon after covering over 4,300‑miles in 27 days.

(MAHWAH, N.J.) ‑ August 26, 2013 ‑On Wednesday August 21, the Land Rover Expedition America team successfully reached the Pacific Ocean at Port Orford, Oregon after covering over 4,300‑miles in 27 days. The expedition used Land Rover LR4 vehicles for this landmark off‑road drive.

This incredible adventure route followed the Trans‑America Trail, the brainchild of Mississippi adventure motorcyclist Sam Correro. The team followed the unpaved trails, forest trails, logging roads, and existing passes that make up the Trans‑America Trail. Expedition leader Tom "TC" Collins used official Trans‑America Trail maps and a GPS navigation system to guide the expedition.

Upon arriving at the Pacific Coast in Oregon, Tom Collins called trail architect Sam Correro, who was overjoyed to receive news of the safe and successful arrival of the expedition in Oregon.

"Sam Correro's 30 years of research and exploration allowed us to do this journey," said Collins.   "I hope our journey highlights what an amazing job he has done and brings the Trans‑America Trail to prominence."

Earlier in the trip, the expedition narrowly escaped flash floods in New Mexico and Utah. In Oregon, the greatest challenge came in the last 48 hours of the expedition when forest fires forced the closure of many trails.

"We give our thanks to the firefighters in Oregon who provided us with detailed advice on how to safely navigate around the fire zones. Without their assistance we would have not been able to reach our goal," said Collins.  "The sight of the ocean is something the team on the trip has been dreaming of.  After weeks of dust, plains, mountains and desert, the Pacific is an incredible sight."

This was the first fully documented crossing of the Trans‑America Trail in a production SUV. The Land Rover LR4 vehicles used on this expedition were showroom stock, riding on factory all‑season tires. The only add‑ons were dealer accessory winches and factory roof racks. The vehicles performed flawlessly with no mechanical issues throughout the expedition, and the only repairs required over the 27 days were a few tire punctures from jagged rocks.

Land Rover launched this expedition to highlight the adventures that are at hand within the United States, and the capability of the Land Rover LR4. The Trans‑America Trail is a challenge that anyone with a sense of adventure can pursue, and Land Rover is proud to share the story of this landmark expedition.
