Mahwah, NJ – Friday August 14, 2026: The Defender brand is building a road‑legal evolution of its 2026 Dakar Rally‑winning race car, representing the pinnacle of durability and performance forged in the heat of competition.

The exclusive limited‑run 4x4 is a race‑bred evolution of the victorious D7X‑R. It brings trailblazing rally‑raid capability to the road. A combination of 75 years of off‑road innovation and competition‑derived design.

Engineers have pushed the boundaries of what’s possible for Defender Dakar, with uprated geometry, enhanced suspension, off‑road body adaptations, rally‑inspired interior elements and distinctive color options.

Defender have revealed a Design Preview Model at The Quail by The Peninsula, A Motorsports Gathering, in California as part of Monterey Car Week. Five years after its return to the US market and more than 130,000 sales later, the Defender brand’s momentum continues to build, driven by the success of Defender OCTA and the strength of its diverse, highly capable lineup. The Quail by the Peninsula, provides the ideal setting for an exclusive preview of this new vehicle alongside historic Heritage Defenders, the class‑winning Defender D7X‑R Dakar Rally competitor, and driving experiences on the Land Rover Experience trails.

Defender Rally made history on its competitive debut at the 2026 Dakar Rally – widely considered the world’s most extreme off‑road race. After 14 days of grueling competition, the three D7X‑R vehicles finished in first, second and fourth places in the new Stock class, as well as achieving a ‘1,2,3’ result on 10 of the 13 demanding stages. Together they demonstrated unwavering durability across a combined total distance of 24,000km (14,913mi).

The race car for the road will retain the same tough D7x body architecture, transmission and driveline of the D7X‑R competition car – all of which is based on the Defender OCTA. The limited‑run Defender Dakar also has the same 4.4‑liter twin turbo V8 engine, which will be unrestricted from race regulations to unleash its full 635PS (626hp). It features greater cooling and is capable of producing 750Nm (553 lb. Ft) of torque.

Defender Dakar will feature a 35‑inch tire package, with Advanced All‑Terrain Tires on new forged 20‑inch wheels, alongside coil suspension with motorsport‑proven Bilstein Advanced Dampers, new Dunes and Gravel Drive modes, and the revolutionary Flight Mode which was originally developed for the competition car to ensure smooth landings on extreme and varied terrain.

Exterior details showcase its rally provenance, with roof‑mounted light pods, a fixed metal roof, carbon fiber raised air intakes, carbon fiber hood, extended wheel arches with exposed rivets, tailgate blanking plate and signature mud flaps. An enhanced metal front under shield and underbody protection complete the race‑inspired specification.

We’ve pushed our engineers to go further than they’ve ever gone before. First, we evolved Defender OCTA into D7X‑R and then we asked: could we make the Dakar Rally‑winning D7X‑R road legal? The result is the Defender Dakar.
It’s the ultimate expression of adventure and is a true reflection of how we embrace the impossible. It embodies not only the spirit of the Defender Rally team but our continued and historic legacy of off‑road innovation. This limited‑run model will showcase everything we’ve learned in some of the toughest environments and most competitive conditions imaginable. An authentic Defender, made from unstoppable DNA.

Defender Dakar will be available with a range of color options, headlined by the signature Dakar Sand body and Yanbu Turquoise roof combination inspired by the race‑winning D7X‑R livery. The Matte Protective Film is optional with Narvik Black and Alaska White.

Inside, the limited‑edition model will combine rally‑inspired details with tough luxury. It will feature a 2+2 seating configuration with row‑one race seats specifically designed for Defender Dakar. Four‑point racing harnesses will be optional, with rear stowage designed to fit race helmets. The loadspace will feature a specially engineered mounting for the spare wheel and air compressor.

Registrations of interest in the exclusive Defender Dakar are now being collated and will be available to reserve from early 2027. Further technical details and specifications will be revealed at the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.

The tough luxury Defender OCTA is the master of extreme performance – taking performance and capability to another level on and off‑road.

A beacon of liberty that can trace its roots back to the first Land Rover in 1948, Defender is a brand that supports humanitarian and conservation work with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Tusk Trust.

The Defender brand is underpinned by Land Rover – a mark of trust built on more than 75 years of expertise in technology and world‑leading off‑road capability.

Defender is designed and engineered in the UK and sold in 121 countries. It belongs to the JLR house of brands alongside Range Rover, Discovery and Jaguar.

DEFENDER RALLY

Defender embraces the impossible, and Defender Rally embodies this to the extreme, demonstrating the ultimate capability, reliability and endurance in the most challenging of environments.

In 2025 Defender became the official car partner of the Dakar Rally, the partnership set to continue in 2026, 2027 and 2028. From 2026, Defender will also compete in the FIA World Rally‑Raid Championship (W2RC), entering the ‘Stock’ category – this being the first of a three‑year programme.

Defender’s capability is designed to take on the most challenging of conditions, with Dakar Rally being the ultimate test. The competition car retains the same tough, purpose‑engineered D7x body architecture as the Defender, based on a lightweight aluminum monocoque construction to create a stiff body structure, in addition to featuring the 4.4‑liter twin turbo V8 engine from Defender OCTA to provide exceptional drivability.

While Defender will not compete in Dakar until 2026, it played a key role at the 2025 rally as the event’s official vehicle partner. A fleet of 20 Defenders supported the event, which began in Bisha, Saudi Arabia, and ended in Shubaytah, transporting race officials and VIP media. A further six highly‑specialized Defender recce vehicles will be used by Dakar Rally organizers to plan the routes for the 2026, 2027 and 2028 events.
